Navigating that first wave of problematic behavior in the classroom

By the middle of September, we are well into the first semester of school. Back-to- school routines are in place, and the newness of shoes, uniforms, supplies and the classroom has worn off. The formerly compliant, respectful and pleasant attitudes of some students have waned. For many students, the honeymoon is over.

The “honeymoon” period refers to the first few weeks of school when students display their best behavior as they acclimate to the classroom routine. After a few weeks when students are comfortable in the classroom, some begin to test limits and display behavior problems.

How educators prepare for the inevitable post-honeymoon period affects the climate and quality of instruction in the classroom all year. Concurrently, how parents respond is a critical component to mitigating disruptive classroom behavior. Teachers and parents have to work together to maintain a viable learning environment for everyone.
