Hero’s Homecoming Honors Local Veteran
Last Friday afternoon, sisters Missy Rodriguez and Gina Gossett were faced with a difficult decision. Their 75-year-old father, Jerry Thompson, had been placed on hospice care, which left the two to determine how and when to bring him home. Such decisions are always heavy, but these two ladies had one more thought lingering in the backs of their minds.
Mr. Thompson, who will tell you he just goes by Jerry, bravely served our country as a younger man, but never received a true welcome home that he and every other serviceman and woman deserve. Jerry was a Navy Corpsman – Delta Company, 1st Battalion 7th Marines, to be specific. Jerry’s unit served on the front lines during an active war, where he tended to the wounded and survived events that he would go on to keep to himself for the rest of his life. His heroic acts earned him two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and several other awards that the family is just now discovering nearly 45 years later. This warrior served for four years, but came home without much fanfare. In fact Jerry says, “As far as that goes, I had none.” You see, Jerry Thompson is a Vietnam Vet.
