North Forney Varsity Basketball Boys lose “heartbreaker” to Mesquite Poteet
Still with heart beating fast from the J. V. overtime victory, I moved a little closer to the court so that I could hear Coach Kevin Walker and settled in for what had been proclaimed to me as “promises to be one of the best spectator games of the season”—IT WAS!
The TIP went up; North Forney took the ball down the court, and #2 Tre Summers “drove the wing” for 2 points, “breaking the scoring ice” at 7:15 of the 1st quarter after the team had shown some crisp passing. It took Poteet 75 seconds to answer with a “2” to tie things at 6:00 left. Play continued with #42 Gavin Sterling strongly rebounding, but Poteet drove hard left for another “2” and their first lead at 2—4 at 5:00 to play. Falcons answered with their own “2,” disallowed for some reason by one referee, and Pirates #4 swished a long “3” at 4:20 for a lead of 2—7.
Play became a little ragged both ways; Forney scored again, and again it was “waved off,” supposedly for travelling. Falcons defended well and took the ball back, and #42 “doublefaked” and spun in the “2” at 3:19 to move closer at 4—7; but, the Pirate “really tall player” (#12) answered with a shot in close to push the lead back to 4—9.
