One-room schoolhouse boy never tried to be a “Big Shot!”

1942—2020: JERRY SLOAN, often termed, “The Original Bull”

When I think of this player and coach, I also think of his players, John Stockton, who still wore the standard basketball shorts instead of the “pedal-pusher” style of later years, and Karl Malone, whom I always envisioned as a “Maverick,” when the two of them were running the “Pick-and-Roll” for two points time-after-time, even when their foes knew what was coming! Yes, these three men personified some of the best days of the NBA at the end of the 20th Century, when I was still young enough to play basketball with our Church Team in Dallas and with my sons on various courts in Forney, including sometimes the Themer driveway.

First drafted by the Baltimore Bullets, he was selected the next year in the ’66 Expansion Draft. JERRY SLOAN was known, and will surely be remembered for, his longevity, loyalty, grit and toughness, innovation, competitive fierceness on the court, and, as the Dallas Mavericks Coach, Rick Carlisle, asserted—being a “trusted friend” and “helping him and countless other young Assistants achieve their dreams of becoming NBA Head Coaches.”
