For one who spends time outdoors through all the seasons in pursuit of fish and game and the simple elation of being ‘out there’, I must admit I love the dead of winter best of all. I know there are those that favor Autumn when the leaves are aglow or spring when the woods are coming alive but it’s a cold, crisp winters day spent hunting with great friends that I will probably remember most when one of these days, I am relegated to a rocking chair, dreaming of past adventures.
Last winter, White-nose Syndrome (WNS) was detected in bats in 18 counties in central Texas and the disease has continued to spread. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is monitoring its progression through the state and is asking for the public’s help to understand how WNS is affecting vulnerable bat populations.
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a neurological disease in deer, elk, moose and other members of the deer family, known as “cervids.” The disease was first recognized in 1967 in captive mule deer in Colorado, and has since been documented in captive and freeranging deer in states and two Canadian Provinces. The first case of CWD in Texas was discovered in 2012 in free-ranging mule deer in an isolated area of far West Texas.
In less than a week, the second Legacy Class largemouth bass of the 2021 Toyota ShareLunker season was reeled in at Lake Austin Thursday evening January 14. Angler CJ Oates, from Lago Vista, Texas, caught the 13.02-pounder just a few days after “ShareLunker 586” was claimed at Sam Rayburn.
Park rangers from around Texas, including the Buffalo Soldier Heritage Outreach Program and the Texas Outdoor Family staff, are debuting a new series of virtual programs celebrating Black History throughout the month of February. The series will culminate in a live, interactive Black History Trivia Challenge for the public at 6 p.m. on Feb. 27.
On Monday night, Forney ISD approved the hiring of Jeff Fleener as the new head athletic coordinator and football coach for Forney High School. Fleener joins the Forney Family with an impressive and successful 19 year coaching history.
Crandall ISD Trustees approved a resolution declaring educators as frontline workers at a regular meeting held earlier this week. The measure is in line with districts across the state asking Governor Abbott to pronounce all Texas educators as frontline workers so they may receive priority in obtaining early vaccinations against COVID-19.

STAR Transit is providing free rides for persons with confirmed appointment to get the COVID 19 vaccine shots. The curb-to-curb service extends outside of the agency’s service area. Rides are available Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. For this purpose, STAR Transit is temporarily adding Saturday service from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Reservations should be made at least one service day in advance and are based on vehicle availability.
The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) will temporarily change the disinfectant in its water treatment process from March 1 through March 29, 2021. The annual, routine change is necessary to maintain the regional system and year-round water quality.
Walmart will be offering free COVID-19 testing at the Forney location on Hwy 80. Testing will be available Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7am to 9am. First priority is health care workers, first responders, and those over 65. Then others who have symptoms as determined by the CDC may be tested. The name of Valentine represents a deeper love than just romantic relationships and a willingness to sacrifice your life for your faith and loved ones. It shows a deep commitment and love that should be valued and cherished in all forms in which it is found. We celebrate his feast day, St. Valentine’s Day, on the 14th of February, and he is honored as the patron saint of lovers. St. Valentine celebrated love in all of its forms, and inspired the romantic holiday of love today.
